Pride Props

Congratulations on your Pride issue. Thoroughly enjoyable. I grew up in Los Angeles reading the L.A. Times and their legendary columnist, Jack Smith. Your Dana Miller is our Jack Smith. My boyfriend and I believe him to be the heart and soul of gay Southern California. We race when a new edition of your magazine comes out to read his thoughts. I fear this may sound a bit like a stalker, but we’ve got to buy that guy a drink.

WOW! Joss Stone on the cover—I’m impressed. LOVED the photo spread and the online video. This is the best gay magazine around, and it’s free! I pick it up every now and then, and always read “Out and About” and Billy Masters, and loved the piece on Connexion—I couldn’t agree more about online dating! Keep up the good work.

I read the Pride issue this morning and want to, first of all, thank you for supporting 88’s Cabaret and our first anniversary.

More than that, I was actually proud to have coverage in your Pride issue. As a gay man, I am very proud of who I am and who I work hard at being every day. I am proud to say I’m gay. Unfortunately, I am not always proud of gay culture in general and very often ashamed of the content in gay magazines. In flipping through the Pride issue, I was waiting to cringe at one thing or another, but to my surprise, I kept coming upon content I was proud of. I especially loved the historical spread on West Hollywood, “Missed Connexion,” True Stories, the amazing cover and, of course, my husband’s article [“Out and About”]. I guess my rambling just boils down to a warm and resounding applause and kudos to you for making it OK for me to send this issue to my Mormon sister. She may gawk at the naked boys and she may howl at the massage ads, but at least she can read and see about the “normal” things we do as opposed to the constant negative sexualized stigma society sees gays as [having].

Just a note to thank all of you at IN Los Angeles and Karen Ocamb for an excellent treatment of Malcolm’s essay for the Gay Pride issue. ... The issue was a great accomplishment on many levels. It is always a source of real pride for our community!
