From the heart of WeHo to the Valley’s hiking trails,
there’s plenty of activities to keep L.A.’s lesbian
from getting cabin fever during the frigid months of winter.
Shorts Stop
It’s film fest season year round with “Show Us
Your Shorts” at Ultra Suede. Join lesbian comedienne
and the evening’s host, Poppy Champlin, for a series
of film fest faves including Commitment Ceremony, written
by Big Gay Sketch Show’s hilarious Julie Goldman; Poppy’s
Foursome penned by Champlin; Drag Nuns in Tinseltown; Dirty
Mary; and The Frank Anderson. After the quintet of short
films, stick around for Girlbar, where two-for-one drink
specials from 9-10:30 p.m. make short work of what could
be a long night at Ultra Suede. “Show Us Your Shorts” runs
Friday, Jan. 25 at Ultra Suede, 661 N. Robertson Blvd., WeHo.
Cover is $5. www.girlbar.com
Silence is Golden
Here’s a chance to rub elbows with The L Word hottie
Daniela Sea—for a good cause of course—at Silence
the Hate, a fundraiser and educational event to benefit the
building of the Gay American Heroes Project. But don’t
let the “educational” scare you. We gays know
how to turn every event into a downright party. Sea’s
slated to host the evening intended to raise funds for a
traveling memorial to LGBT community members who’ve
lost their lives to hate crimes. And there’s plenty
of celebrity heft to make the event a true Hollywood fundraiser.
Adding some eye candy for the ladies, Dante’s Cove’s
Thea Gill will be on hand, as well as gay faves Alan Cumming,
Chad Allen, Reichen Lehmkuhl and others. Silence the Hate
runs from 3-7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 26. East/West Lounge,
8851 Santa Monica Blvd. WeHo. Donation is $40.
The L Word —
With a Side of Fries
It’s all about The L Word since its fifth season premiere
Jan. 6. And WeHo’s most hoppin’ burger joint
and gay hangout, Hamburger Mary’s, offers another alternative
to screen The L Word outside the privacy of your own home.
Get your L Word fix over a burger and a plate of nachos at
Hamburger Mary’s Ladies Night, complete with live performances
and drink specials. Word on the street is that Hamburger
Mary’s on Sunday is becoming a must-hit hot spot. With
that kind of buzz maybe the show’s stars and their
new best friend, Paris Hilton, will mosey over for a burger
and a famed $5 martini. The L Word screens Sundays beginning
at 7 p.m. at Hamburger Mary’s, 8288 Santa Monica Blvd.,
WeHo. www.hamburgermarysweho.com
Take a Hike, Pal
After all the cocktails and nightlife, there’s nothing
like an invigorating hike to get the heart rate going. Butch
out in your best hiking boots and join Women on a Roll and
an experienced hike leader for a one-and-a-half hour hike
through the stunning Upper Virgenes Canyon in nearby Woodland
Hills. With panoramic views of the city and the surrounding
golden hills that help make Los Angeles the jewel of the
West, Upper Virgenes Canyon is a moderate hiking area frequented
by horseback riders and cyclists. Four legged friends on
a leash are welcome, and everyone knows that a cute dog makes
a marvelous pick-up tool. Women on a Roll founder Andrea
Meyerson—who’s garnered a reputation as a bit
of a lesbian matchmaker—has been bringing L.A.’s
gay ladies together for more than 12 years. And you never
know who you might bump into on the trail. The hike begins
at 10 a.m. at Upper Virgenes Canyon, off of Victory Boulevard
in Woodland Hills. The event is free for Women on a Roll
members and $5 for non-members. www.womenonaroll.com
