The Cocktail Everybody Wants

I had drinks a while back with the brand ambassador for The Glenrothes, a rather tasty single-malt Scotch whisky. He told me that they planned to associate it with Scotch cocktails to promote the brand, and that they’d chosen the Blood and Sand and the Rob Roy as the drinks that worked best. Excellent choices, I thought, as they’re the only two cocktails made with Scotch that anybody has ever heard of. The Rob Roy is just a Scotch Manhattan, so it doesn’t really need its own name. The Blood and Sand is less well-known but it makes magic in your mouth. Cherry Heering is a brand of cherry liqueur also promoting the Blood and Sand as a cocktail to make with their product, but they recommend you double the amount of it to put into the drink, however I enjoy it with equal parts of everything as in the recipe below. Chances are you’ll find a vermouth company and the World Orange Juice Association (I just made that up) promoting their liquids through this drink as well. They should—this is a fine cocktail to make, no matter who is trying to make it their own.

Blood and Sand

1 ounce Scotch whisky
1 ounce sweet (red) vermouth
1 ounce orange juice
1 ounce Cherry Heering cherry liqueur

Add all ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange peel.
