A Hero’s Legacy

1978: Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official
in California, at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade
months before his assassination. Milk’s short but influential
political career helped overturn the history-altering anti-gay
Briggs Initiative and is often cited as instrumental in the
burgeoning gay rights movement.
