Gender Upheaval

It’s a rethinking of the time-honored archetype of the male athlete as an aggressive, overtly heterosexual, hyper-competitive and emotionally remote subject—and it’s about time! In “Contemporary Projects 11: Hard Targets—Masculinity and Sport,” six artists offer opposing views of masculinity and sport, and of the entire theater of athletic play, including the rituals and accoutrements that surround this intimate, male-dominated world. LACMA Hammer Building. Closes Mon., Jan. 19. $12. lacma.org

Sat., Jan. 17

Doo Wah Diddy

It’s hilarious hijinks and delicious debauchery when kitsch king Charles Phoenix grand marshals the 32nd annual Pasadena Doo Dah Parade. The Tournament of Roses alter ego has gained national recognition as Pasadena's “other parade,” featuring a woolly range of mischief, grounded superheroes, political pundits, art-car inventors and other bohemian frolickers. Expect no less from this year’s satirical exhibition. Colorado Boulevard. Sun., Jan. 18. 11:30 a.m. Free admission. pasadenadoodahparade.info
