Ballin’: East L.A. Moves West

BY STEPHAN HORBELT

Sometimes it's easy to forget that gay boys and girls in Los Angeles come in several different varieties. The first to pop into mind, and perhaps also the most prevalent, is the West Hollywood party boy, plucked and waxed, jumping from The Abbey to Here Lounge, and occasionally mixing things up at Fiesta Cantina. Then there's the Silver Lake gay, wearing his vintage T-shirt and three days of scruff, who enjoys Akbar and mocking the aforementioned. Often forgotten about and excluded from the party circuit are the East L.A. gays, complete with sexy Latin features and an easygoing, laid-back mentality that borders on being asleep.

Thanks to Burton Castro, the East L.A. gays have found representation, within the depths of West Hollywood of all places. WeHo mainstay Fubar has always been the place to find fun, whether it's in the form of great music or hot go-go dancers. Now every first and third Sunday of the month, Fubar is the place to find these East L.A. gays, in addition to those who have a penchant for thug love. Dubbed Ballin', this party caters to the thug in all of us, featuring a variety of music that you probably won't hear anywhere else. With a roster of DJs who specialize in everything from hip-hop to dance to Top 40 tracks, you're bound to find most of the crowd finishing up their weekend on the dance floor.

The crowd at Ballin' includes boys from all over town. With the rarity of options for this type of party, you'll come across guys from West Hollywood, Silver Lake, the Valley, and of course, straight from the source, all the way from East L.A. Despite the variance in home turf, everyone has the same intent—to down some beers, do some dancing, and maybe meet that special someone. Nowhere else will you find a group of guys (and maybe a girl or two) who are as friendly and laid-back as the patrons here. There's no pretension whatsoever, which means you can have fun with your friends and really enjoy the weekend wrap-up.
