DANCE CARD

Dirty Sailor: Beer Bust, WeHo Style

BY STEPHAN HORBELT

Gay men who love punk and rock music are in quite a predicament. The number of bars and clubs that cater to their sophisticated musical tastes are extremely narrow, particularly in the heart of West Hollywood. One is for sure more likely to hear old punk and metal over on the Eastside, but even the popular Silver Lake watering holes may mix in a little pop or house music. Los Angeles needed a night for the gay punk rock purists, a party where Janet and Kylie weren't blasted over the speakers and where walking through the dance floor didn't mean getting drenched by raspberry martini. In a city as big as L.A., it's about time that rock-loving gays have a place to play.

Started by Danny (of Mustache Monday) and Case Calkins, Dirty Sailor takes place every Wednesday night at Silver Lake's MJ's. Here you'll find no pop or dance music, but instead, a fun and exciting mix of great rock, punk, and metal standards. Whether you're a fan of the music or just have a thing for tatts and shaved heads, this night is proof that fun can be had without Madonna telling you to strike a pose. The crowd is a mixture of guys and girls from around the city, with the majority of patrons being of Eastside and downtown stock.

As if an unpretentious night of rock music among sexy guys wasn't enough to lure you out, the “surfer-chic” tiki vibe at Dirty Sailor creates a fun environment for boozing and all-around debauchery. The bar is decked out in full tiki regalia, and the patrons play along, sporting everything from under-the-water themed costumes to naughty sailor outfits. To get the full experience, partake in the drink specials, which include Dirty Sailor shots and other Tiki-inspired fruit drinks, cheap draft beer, and a $3 jungle juice that'll heat up your insides. No party at MJ's would be complete without naughty go-gos, and be sure to check out the back patio, where adult film star Nick Piston pours the drinks.

Expect each week at Dirty Sailor to be a little different, since one impetus behind starting the night was to give the boys some new and different options when going out. Depending on the night, as well as the guest host and DJ, you may hear anything from raucous rock tracks to surf and garage punk. Past DJs and hosts have included Dino Dinco, Tom Walker, and Fade-Dra. For a night of fun and excitement outside the constraints of West Hollywood, head to Dirty Sailor.
