Love Profusion

Even if you're not planning on getting hitched, be a part of a group LGBT commitment ceremony at the Abbey to effect change

BY JONATHAN RIGGS

A beautiful revolution is going to happen this June 4 at the Abbey in West Hollywood. To kick off National Gay Pride month and L.A. Pride, 50 couples from around the nation will participate in a symbolic dusk commitment ceremony.

“I only wish that it were legally binding, but this event is important symbolically. It shows the world that LGBT couples care for and love one another the same as anyone else,” West Hollywood Mayor Jeff Prang says. “This is an opportunity to educate the public, to change minds and—we hope—to move us further toward full equality.”

The event, the brainchild of www.loveandpride.com designer Udi Behr, came to life as a peaceful protest against attacks on LGBT rights.

“I wanted to unite the message of the 'Erase Hate' pendant I created for the Matthew Shepard Foundation with our 'Love and Pride' wedding and commitment rings,” Behr offers. “I hope this event reminds everyone that the love between two people should never be denied no mater what race, creed, color, or sexual orientation.”

Officiated by Mayor Prang, witnessed by Judy Shepard and hosted by T.R. Knight. “It's going to be a very fun and special night,” Shepard says. “The sacredness of a commitment between two loving individuals is the best way to celebrate.”

At 8 p.m., bells will chime as Pachebel's Canon in D major plays, performed by jazz artist Steve Oliver. There is no cost for the event, and everyone in attendance will be given a Matthew Shepard “Erase Hate” pendant (sales of which benefit its namesake's foundation 100%).

“I encourage everyone to come out and show your support whether you are getting married or not!” Shepard says. “It is important for the public to see happy LGBT couples expressing their love for each other. This isn't just an LGBT event, but a community event.”

The fact that this event is happening in West Hollywood just underscores the city's reputation for celebrating diversity and championing civil liberties, especially for the LGBT community.

“We are so close to gaining full marriage equality in California,” Prang reveals. “This event reminds all fair-minded Americans that we need to recommit ourselves to the fundamental principles of fairness and equality that are guaranteed in the Constitution.”

NOTE TO PARTICIPANTS: Ceremony space is limited to only 50 couples and will be accommodated on a first-come, first-served basis. Pre-registration is required at www.MatthewShepard.org/GetMarried
