With Pride season upon us,
it’s been a frightfully busy few weeks here at the
Frontiers office. Having just published our Long Beach Pride
issue and having already begun work on our double-sized L.A.
Pride issue, we fortunately have our “Summer Entertainment
Preview” issue sandwiched in between as a respite from
the more substantial editorial in those issues. For myself
and, I’m certain, many of you, the must-see film this
summer is the cinematic adaptation of Sex and the City so
it made sense to make it our cover feature. A recent L.A.
Times article written by two men — presumably straight — about
the film suggests it will appeal only to a very marginalized
demographic—women over 30. Strangely, there wasn’t
one mention of the potentially lucrative gay audience in
the entire article. I have so many fond memories of viewing
parties my friends and I held each Sunday during the HBO
series’ original run. We all preferred it to the more
overtly gay-themed Queer as Folk. While I’ve read interviews
in which director/writer Michael Patrick King and the stars
of the series and film bristle at the characters being described
as gay men in women’s bodies, has there ever been another
television series that was so relatable to a gay audience?
Certain episodes actually caused us to audibly gasp, wondering
if the writers had eavesdropped on our private conversations.
I have little doubt that our pink dollars will help make
this film a sizeable box office hit when it’s released
in theaters on May 30.
As I’m writing this, as my production director is
pounding on my door begging me to finish this letter so he
can complete sending this issue to the printer, there’s
a deafening cheer ringing throughout our office. It’s
an historic day for civil rights as it’s just been
announced that the California Supreme Court has overturned
the ban on same-sex marriage. Obviously, this is wonderful
news that could have a huge impact throughout our country.
I expect to see many of you dancing in the streets this evening.
I hope you enjoy this issue and as always, I welcome your
feedback. Write in (to letters@frontierspublishing.com) to
let us know what you think.
Yours,
Jeremy Kinser
