In honor of the April 27 screening of Blonde Venus at the
Aero, we bring you an all Marlene Dietrich-themed Cheap Date.
1:01 p.m.
Suck in your cheekbones and head out for some Dietrich-inspired
dining at the Red Lion Tavern (2366 Glendale Blvd.) in
Silver Lake. We suggest indulging in a wide range of tastes
(much like our favorite Germanic goddess) and sharing both
the largest sausage on the menu as well as the fish.
Cost: Around $15 a person unless you get carried away in
the beer garden
2:14 p.m.
Playing Marlene’s album Love Songs to further enhance
the mood, head on down to her star on the Walk of Fame (6400
Hollywood Blvd.). Then, throw on a top hat and kick up your
heels doing your best Lola from The Blue Angel impression
for an unforgettable photograph.
Cost: Free
2:33 p.m.
Walk down just a few short blocks away until you reach the
Hollywood History Museum (1660 N. Highland Ave.). Overdose
on all things glamour and Hollywood while gazing at the
same mirrors Marlene looked into after approving Max Factor’s
touch ups. We believe one of her wigs is still on display
as well.
Cost: $15 a person
5:29 p.m.
Surprise your date by playing lesser-known Dietrich ditties
like her cover of Pete Seeger’s “Where have
all the flowers gone” while making the drive down
to the Aero Theatre (1328 Montana Ave.) for an early evening
screening of Blonde Venus. As if the pairing of Marlene
and Cary Grant weren’t enough, this fantastic film
features everything from a nude swimming scene to Marlene
singing “Hot Voodoo” in a gorilla suit.
Cost: $10 each
7:17 p.m.
It was no accident Marlene played a cigar-smoking brothel
owner in Touch of Evil as it’s been said she was
known to suck on a stogie or two a day. Pick up a few of
your very own at the Tinder Box (8621 Santa Monica Blvd.).
Cost: Depends on the cigar
