All That Glitters

With every issue of this magazine we try to bring you the latest information and news on LGBT scenes, trends, and culture. For this issue our publication schedule showed that it was time for Frontiers’ annual “Best of Gay Los Angeles,” however, we decided to take a more subjective approach and called it “25 Great Things about Gay L.A.” We polled staffmembers, writers, and friends and came up with what we think is a very diverse list of organizations, people, and services that add color, flavor, and sass to our city. You can read the feature on page 38 and we welcome your suggestions for next year.

I still have very vivid memories from my childhood of watching television variety shows hosted by Carol Burnett and Cher. Besides the immense talents of these two, what really made their series sparkle—literally—were the bedazzled costume designs of Bob Mackie. As I’m sure thousands of other young gay boys did, each Sunday evening, my eyes were glued to the television screen eagerly anticipating the outrageous Mackie creation that Cher would wear during her opening number. A true legend in the fashion industry and a name synonymous with glamour, Mackie has designed clothing for virtually every formidable female entertainer of the past four decades, including Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, and Madonna. We catch up with him as he is honored by the Hollywood Arts Council this month.

We hope you enjoy this issue and as always, I welcome your feedback. Write in (to letters@frontierspublishing.com) to let us know what you think.

Yours,
Jeremy Kinser
