Fall Back, Spring Forward
I don’t know anyone whose heart wasn’t broken
by the shooting death of 15 year old Oxnard student Lawrence
King. While discussing the tragedy, my friends and I recalled
our own experiences as victims of schoolyard bullies. We
agreed that, after so much talk about the mainstreaming of
gay culture and more acceptance of our lifestyle, it seems
inconceivable that this behavior is still taking place, that
a junior high school student should face intimidation and
violence due to his comfort at expressing himself in front
of his classmates. In his “reveLAtions” column
(p. 26), Michael Kearns investigates the nature of bullying,
from its genesis to the ultimate consequences it costs all
of us.
Our cover story this issue is a conversation between film
producer (and popular blogger and scenester) JD Disalvatore
and actors Brad Rowe (who first set gay hearts aflutter a
decade ago in Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss) and newcomer
Trevor Wright who star in her fine new movie Shelter. It’s
perhaps the most realistic gay love story since Brokeback
Mountain, and I hope you’ll all go see it when it opens
locally on March 28.
As always, I welcome your feedback. Write in (to letters@frontierspublishing.com)
to let us know what you think.
Yours,
Jeremy Kinser
