Hit It!: A New York Diva Shows L.A. How It’s Done
If you haven't heard of Candis Cayne, you've most likely
been living under a rock. A popular performer in the New
York club circuit, her home until only a month ago, she has
made the move to Los Angeles and seems to be settling in
nicely. Cayne is currently breaking down barriers on network
television, playing the transsexual lover of Billy Baldwin
on Dirty Sexy Money (an inspiring accomplishment because
Cayne was born Brendan McDaniel) but has decided in her spare
time to break down another barrier—that of L.A.'s lately-lackluster
nightlife scene. Cayne has found a new home on Wednesday
nights at east-WeHo mainstay Fubar, the perfect venue for
her new party, Hit It!
The small space at Fubar is perfect for an intimate night
with Cayne, who tends to the crowd like a den mother. Asked
about choosing the venue, Cayne remarked, “I really
liked Fubar because it reminded me of some places I've worked
in New York, like Barracuda. Somewhere cool, edgy, fun, and
not so formal.” While her new party isn't formal by
any means, it's definitely the most formal you've seen Fubar
in ages, a steering away from its previous raunch-and-roll
Wednesday parties. The bar is set up as a small cabaret,
with lounge tables, chairs and a makeshift stage for Cayne's
hilarious routine.
Those unfamiliar with Cayne's on-stage antics are in for
a real surprise. Her routine is a combination of dancing,
lip-synching and comedy, or as she herself refers to it, “a
high-kicking, fast-twirling, hair-flipping good time.” But
the night is more than Cayne's quips and famous walk-outs
(she likes to sometimes extend her act outside the bar and
down the street); you'll also get to hear great music, spun
by her sexy husband DJ Marco, also popular in New York for
his fun mix of electronic and funky house music. It's some
of the best music you'll hear all week, and he consistently
gets the crowd in the mood.
The crowd at Hit It! is as diverse as a night out in New
York—well, almost. Much of the crowd consists of New
York émigrés, people familiar with Cayne's
shows back in New York, where she was a staple among the
gays. “I like the Silver Lake crowd, but I also like
the muscle gays,” says Cayne. “I just want people
to get excited about something new. Everybody seems really
cool and I'm glad they're opening their arms to me.” With
her show coming back for another season and her Wednesday
party sure to do well, Cayne's life is pretty golden. There's
only one thing she's worried about —“My humor
is so New York, it'll take time to adapt. I can't tell those
Jersey jokes anymore. I guess I'll have to talk about the
valley.”
