Vitamin C for Cocktail

I was staring blankly into the liquor cabinet and decided I wanted to try something orangey. With the recent rains, I guess I haven’t been getting enough sunshine and was craving some Vitamin D. Well, Vitamin C would be close enough for cocktails. I started with Gran Gala, an orange liqueur along the lines of Grand Marnier and Cointreau, and Aperol, a slightly orange, slightly bitter liqueur that makes a nice aperitif with soda water. To that I added orange juice and gave the drink a try, but it was missing something. It needed a creamy or milky element like what I remember Orange Julius shakes to taste like when I was a kid hanging out in the mall. But instead of using an egg white to froth it up, I went with Navan, a vanilla liqueur. It turned out to be a fine choice. The resulting drink is quite sweet—that’s three sugary liqueurs plus juice if you’re counting—but really tasty. I enjoyed it in a cocktail, but you might like it as a sunshine shooter.

1/2 oz. Gran Gala orange liqueur
1/2 oz. Navan vanilla liqueur
1/2 oz. Aperol
3 oz. orange juice

Add all ingredients to an ice-filled shaker. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass.
